LOUISIANA STATE PENITENTIARY
Applicants will be required to take and pass the Corrections Cadet Test administered by the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Corrections Services to be considered for this vacancy.

This position may be filled as a Temporary Job Appointment. Should a permanent position become available, the employee will be converted to a probationary appointment.
As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Corrections Cadet, Sergeant or Sergeant-Master depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). The maximum salary for the Sergeant-Master is $53,664 annually. Please refer to the 'Job Specifications' tab located at the top of the LA Careers 'Current Job Opportunities' page of the Civil Service website for specific information on salary ranges, minimum qualifications and job concepts for each level.
On limited occasions, this position may also be filled at the specialized level of Corrections Sergeant-Master/Leadworker. It may be filled by probational, promotional or job appointment.
This is a 24 hour facility. Any degree, certificate, special license, or DD 214 must be verified by official documentation prior to hire. Applicants may be required to work shift work and may be required to work in close quarters with offenders.

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
One year of continuous employment in any field of work will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have attained eighteenth birthday at time of application.
Must have a valid driver's license.
An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Function of Work:
To learn to maintain security of a correctional institution and to observe and participate in supervision, control, and custody of offenders.
Level of Work:
General from training officers and security officers of higher levels.
Location of Work:
Department of Public Safety and Corrections, Corrections Services, State adult and juvenile correctional institutions.
Differs from Corrections Sergeant in that it is an entry level position with primary responsibility in security such as key room, dormitory, control center, field, trip, or gate officer. May act independently or under general supervision.

Trains in classroom and at on-the-job training sites.
Observes security officers engaged in demonstration of security work.
Assists security officers of higher level in work as journeyman security officers such as cellblock, dormitory, trips, gate officer, chase team, or dog trainer.
Oversees inmates for training purposes.
Responds to emergencies and renders assistance as required.
Prepares reports on activities.
